Protecting Your Back with Layers of Prevention
Keeping yourself free of back pain is a lifelong struggle
The sooner you start, the more likely you are to be successful in keeping back pain at bay. The simple truth is that our current healthcare system does not set our citizens up for success; western medicine is predicated upon waiting until the problem happens, and then treating it accordingly. At Hayes Family Chiropractic, we disagree with this course of events. As we have iterated before, the spine is a finite structure- because of the extraordinary amount of responsibilities it has, as well as the enormous amount of pressure that is put on it daily, it is likely to degrade over time. The speed at which this degradation occurs, however, is partially controlled by you!
Taking a proactive approach to caring for your spine
For the purposes of this argument, we are going to exclude genetic factors that predispose you to spinal degeneration- that is for another blog entirely. Apart from degeneration linked to genetics, there are many ways that our spines degrade which are, whether we like it or not, our own fault. Once movement becomes a secondary function in our life, the spine is the first and foremost structure that suffers. Layer 1 of proactively protecting your spine is movement. Movement is maintenance for your musculoskeletal system. Think of it this way: the more you move, the more effectively your muscles are able to support your spine, and the less likely your intervertebral discs are to suffer damage from compression and lack of circulation. But at some point, movement ceases to be enough. Layer 2 is conservative care- spinal adjustment, massage therapy, nonsurgical decompression and other natural modalities that seek to reduce systemic tension, alleviate nerve impingement and balance the body. By focusing on maintaining optimal range of motion in the spinal joints, you can move more effectively and keep protecting your spine no matter your age.
Everyone deserves a long life with a healthy spine
At every layer of protection, education is of primary importance. At Hayes Family Chiropractic, we are Dunedin’s resource for spinal health care and we want to help you start making the changes you need to maintain a high level of spinal health throughout your life. After movement, we are your second layer of spinal support- providing you with targeted, natural modalities that relieve systemic tension, restore balance and promote full range of motion. These two layers of protection alone will go a long way toward keeping your spine healthy late into life.
